In Another Light

David and Erin on the Beach

“What am I? Am I the bulb that carries the light,
or am I the light of which the bulb is a vehicle?”

~ Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

As we honor and celebrate what would be David’s 84th birthday, we invite you to settle into this rediscovered piece of “David being David being Light.”

Love,
Mickey and Judy

The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love — whether we call it friendship or family or romance — is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other’s light. Gentle work. Steadfast work. Life-saving work in those moments when life and shame and sorrow occlude our own light from our view, but there is still a clear-eyed loving person to beam it back. In our best moments, we are that person for another.
— James Baldwin

Note from Erin: Wishing my grandfather a beautiful birthday through the ether.

I’m in the process of updating little bits and bobs of the website and moving over Mickey’s musings to this archive. Mesmerized by the recent Curve Blue video - “In Another Light” - filmed in 2013, I went looking for a photo of my grandfather and me from around that same time. It’s one of my favorites: two Pisceans on the beach. Signature bunny ears (because I was 12/13 and never wanted serious photo-ops). He’s carrying my sandals.

Happy Birthday, DD.
