Northern Lights

“The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit and that its center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.”

– Black Elk

I was recently looking at some footage of years gone by when I found a clip of David recalling his first realization that the universe he saw in the stars was also within himself.

It was during a summer night in Indiana, and he was staring up into the night sky.  Immersed in the childhood wonder of it all, he closed his eyes and continued to see the stars.  With a sudden knowing he said out loud, “The universe is in my brain!”

This childhood revelation continued in the way he explored music. David’s love of long held notes and expansive silences reflected his internal universe. His improvisations echoed with this sense of wonder.

The world we live in is so full of beauty when we can find it within ourselves.
I hope this beauty sustains you throughout the new year.
